Record Set in Cryptocurrency Theft Due to Sophisticated Spam Attack
According to Cyvers Alerts, a new record has been set in cryptocurrency theft as a result of a sophisticated spam attack. In this case, the victim sent 1155 WBTC (wrapped Bitcoin) to the attackers totaling around $30 million. This attack is a type of spam attack known as a dust attack.
What is a Dust Attack?
The essence of a dust attack is as follows: small amounts of cryptocurrencies are sent to the user’s crypto wallet from addresses that are almost identical to those the victim has previously transacted with. Due to carelessness, the victim may copy the fraudsters’ address instead of their own, resulting in funds being sent to the scammers.
In this case, the victim, upon reviewing their wallet data on a blockchain explorer, noticed transfers from addresses that were very similar to those they had used before. As a result, when the victim attempted a new transaction, the funds were sent not to the intended address, but to the fraudsters’ address.
Increasing Threat of Spam Attacks
Earlier, it was reported that the team of the decentralized finance protocol Pike Finance faced a serious issue. Unknown attackers stole 99,970 ARB, 64,126 OP, and 479.39 ETH from the project’s accounts, totaling $1.6 million. This underscores the growing threat of spam attacks and the necessity for increased caution when dealing with cryptocurrencies.
