Cryptopreneur and BitTorrent founder Justin Sun attempted to use diplomatic immunity to avoid the consequences of a civil case. However, his attempt was unsuccessful.
In 2021, Grenada appointed Sun as its ambassador and permanent representative to the World Trade Organization. However, in 2024, he was removed from this position along with other foreigners in similar roles.
Deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Shirin Yasin, clarified that the ambassador status only provides diplomatic immunity during the mission in Switzerland, not in other countries or for judicial proceedings.
Sun likely hoped that his diplomatic status would protect him from both civil and criminal charges. However, his attempt to use this status in court was unsuccessful.
The court arbitrator in the case involving Richard Hall and Lukasz Yuraszek against Rainberry Inc. noted that Sun’s refusal to testify was a deliberate and willful violation of the court order. As a result, his testimony was excluded from the record, and the court ruled that Sun had failed to fulfill his obligations.
Nevertheless, Sun and Rainberry Inc. were able to settle the civil suit with plaintiffs Richard Hall and Lukasz Yuraszek, despite diplomatic immunity not panning out.
Currently, Justin Sun is avoiding trips to Switzerland and San Francisco, preferring to move between countries where he is less likely to be extradited to the USA.
