Hacker Returns Almost All Stolen Funds After Cyberattack

After a large-scale cyberattack, during which the victim lost $68 million in wrapped bitcoins (WBTC), the hacker has agreed to return almost all of the stolen funds. Initially, the criminal converted the funds into Ethereum (ETH), and then, after negotiations, a large portion of the money was returned.

The refund process began on the morning of May 10. The hacker conducted more than 225 transactions throughout the day, transferring between 29 and 67 ETH in each operation. However, due to the decrease in the ether’s value, the total amount of returned funds amounted to $65.7 million, which is approximately $2.3 million less than the initial theft amount. Nevertheless, this constitutes about 95% of the original sum.

Initially, the parties agreed that the hacker would keep 10% of the stolen funds. However, in the end, the criminal returned almost all the money. It is believed that cybersecurity experts from Match Systems played a key role in the successful negotiations, allowing the victim to achieve almost full reimbursement. Now, the victim does not have any claims against the perpetrator.

This case underscores the importance of negotiations and the role of cybersecurity in resolving such situations, as well as demonstrates how changes in the cryptocurrency markets can affect the final reimbursement amounts.
