Bitcoin «Whale» Resurfaces After 11 Years
In a recent unexpected event in the world of cryptocurrencies, an anonymous holder of a large amount of bitcoins, known as the «bitcoin whale» of the Satoshi era, suddenly became active after almost 11.2 years of inactivity. According to Whale Alert, this wallet, whose address started with «1a6Zn», showed movement of 750 BTC, equivalent to approximately $50 million at current rates.
Interestingly, the last time this address was used was on June 4, 2013, when the price of bitcoin was around $120 per coin. Since then, the value of bitcoin has significantly increased, and now the same 750 BTC is worth $50 million, representing a growth of 53,583% from the initial investment. When looking at this growth on an annual basis over 11.2 years, it amounts to around 4,784% per year.
After this long period of inactivity, the wallet owners transferred all their bitcoins to a new address «bc1qc». The reasons for this transfer remain a mystery for now. However, one possible explanation could be a desire to improve security: old addresses like «1» could be less secure compared to modern addresses like «bc1».
This case has become a notable event in the cryptocurrency community, especially against the backdrop of the recent resurgence of other «sleeping» bitcoins. July has proven to be rich in such events, adding intrigue to the already exciting world of cryptocurrencies.
