Concerns over Hashrate Distribution in Bitcoin Network
Currently, the mining pools Foundry USA and AntPool hold more than 51% of the Bitcoin network hashrate. Foundry USA accounts for 33.1% while AntPool controls 23.6%, totaling 56.7% of the BTC network hashrate. This dominance surpasses the closest competitor, ViaBTC, with 13.4%.
Risk of 51% Attack
With Foundry USA’s hashrate increasing by over 50% to 153.6 exahashes per second and AntPool reaching 162.6 exahashes in August, concerns arise about the potential of a 51% attack. Such an attack could enable double spending, posing a threat to the network.
Unlikelihood of Attack on Bitcoin
Although the concentration of hashrate is alarming, executing a 51% attack on Bitcoin is deemed highly improbable. The significant costs, estimated at $1.5 million per hour, make such malicious actions economically unviable. Despite the dominance of Foundry USA and AntPool, the security of the Bitcoin network remains robust.
