May 22, the cryptocurrency community celebrates Bitcoin Pizza Day, a significant date when in 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz exchanged 10,000 BTC for two Papa John’s pizzas. Today, these pizzas are worth almost $700 million, and the holiday has become an important tradition in the world of cryptocurrencies.
In honor of this day, the largest crypto exchange Binance is holding a contest with a prize pool of $2,000. Participants have a chance to win money and also join in a festive offline event where the exchange will treat with pizza. Binance wants to delight the community and emphasize the significance of the event for the entire cryptocurrency industry.
At the same time, the Gemini exchange is also participating in the celebration, announcing a cash contest with a $500 prize. This is another way to mark the important event and draw attention to Bitcoin’s history.
Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, called on everyone to share pizza with friends on this day and tell them about the first cryptocurrency to commemorate the achievement in Bitcoin and cryptography history.
Interestingly, although it is commonly believed that Laszlo Hanyecz spent 10,000 BTC on pizza, Hanyecz himself claims that he actually spent or gave away about half of the approximately 100,000 BTC he mined during that period.
Against the backdrop of the celebration, cryptocurrency markets show activity: according to the Coinglass platform, the price of Bitcoin has risen by 6.1% over the past day and surpassed the $71,000 mark.
